Diabetic driver fined for 3 crashes

LANCASTER, Ohio - A diabetic driver who injured three people in a series of three crashes on one day last year was ordered yesterday to pay $2,488 in fines and court costs.

Fairfield County Municipal Judge David A. Trimmer sentenced William F. Solomon, 68, of Baltimore. Solomon pleaded no contest on April 26 to minor misdemeanor charges related to the crashes.

He has said he was in a low-blood-sugar "blackout" when the crashes occurred.

Trimmer ordered Solomon to pay the maximum $150 each in fines for six charges that included failure to control, improper passing, failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead and failure to stop at a stop sign, plus court costs.

The crashes occurred within nearly 6 miles on May 5, 2010.

Solomon's southbound Dodge cargo van rear-ended motorcyclist Frederick McClung II on Rt. 158 at Pleasantville Road, drove over him and his toppled Honda and sped off.

Still on Rt. 158, the van tried to pass and then swerved into a southbound motorcycle at Ginder Road. Victoria A. Fisher was thrown from her Yamaha.

The van then raced along Rt. 158 into Lancaster, where it ran a stop sign at N. Columbus Street, flipped and landed at Danison Monumental Works. The van hit worker Larry Fox as he was mowing the grass.

Medics who drew blood from Solomon at the final crash scene determined that his blood-sugar level was in the 50s, which is low.

McClung, 44, and Fisher, 61, both of Lancaster, and Fox, 72, of Rushville, have filed a personal-injury lawsuit against Solomon.
