If you are reading this, I’ll assume that you checked Shopping.com or Epinions.com because you wanted an inexpensive Hedge trimmer that you could snag at your nearest Home Depot or Walmart.
While I cannot speak to the long-term ( 1 -5 year) reliability of this product, do to the fact I purchased it recently, I can say that if you have the average home and you have basic edging needs, this trimmer will get the job done and keep your grounds looking neat.
Like numerous products I’m seeing on store shelves nowadays, the HOMELITE UT44110 Hedge Trimmer is MADE IN CHINA even though the company was founded by a one, Charles Ferguson, a resident of New York under the title: HOME ELECTRIC LIGHTING COMPANY. Techtronic INDS (stock exchange TTNDY.pk) includes RYOBI, Hoover and Dirt Devil. The Build quality pales in comparison to Dirt Devil, but it is right around that of Ryobi, albeit a bit cheaper. Its hollow plastic with a safety trigger and a power trigger and some blades that move. That’s it. ergonomic enhancement is non-existent, I.e. no rubberized grip, no special guards, etc but, there is a basic saw guard and a basic plastic hand grip.
This thing costs just $30, and price happened to be my major shopping point as I don’t usually buy stuff like this. I’m not planning to use it for much more than 20 minutes a month so all the fancy dandy enhancements aren’t necessarily missed.
For $10 more, there is the Ryobi 18Volt P2600A which comes with a rechargeable battery, but, I’m not a rechargeable battery lover and I preferred pure electric.
The UT44110 is a simplistic device for a simplistic task. Weeds that have grown no thicker than your pinky, branches slightly thicker than pencils and anything thinner or softer than the extension cord are cut with ease by the reciprocating 17” saw blade. Cut capacity is an average 3/8”. Its really that simple.
So long as you aren’t a professional who definitely needs a gas trimmer to get around large areas, and you are careful not to cut your extension cord, the UT44110 makes for a fantastic trimmer when all you need to do is cut away unsightly weed growth around the house or trim some bushes down. Homelite also has a pole trimmer (UT44160 ) for high bushes that has a slightly higher build quality and an extending pole, but for ground-level jobs the 44110 is a great tool.
For larger cut capacity needs, and high torque cutting needs, you should definitely go for a more powerful gas trimmer such as the $180 Ryobi RY39500. Then you‘ll be able to cut pretty much any plant growth including twigs.
I‘m very satisfied because my Home and Gardening needs are not tremendous. This is a great tool for small homes with pesky weed growth inside bushes or for general purpose trimming.
