Beaches police briefs: 'No return' policy sets off customer at Jo-Ann's store | jacksonville.com

The following is a compilation of reports from Beaches-area police departments:

- A dispute over a returns policy ended with a customer spitting in the face of a worker about 7:40 p.m. Thursday at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Store, 977 Atlantic Blvd.

Police said a man went into the store wanting to return a product. When the 31-year-old woman working in the store told the man they had a "no-return policy," the man became angry, started yelling profanities at the woman and then spit in her face. Before the woman could call police, the man ran out of the store, got into a Chevrolet pickup truck and drove away. The woman wrote down a license plate number, but police said it was a defunct tag.

- Ten rosebushes were destroyed between Oct. 8 and Oct. 13 at Bull Park, 1200 Sandpiper Lane. Police said a city public works employee found the bushes worth a total of $150 destroyed and that someone probably used a chemical to kill the plants.

- A Solar beach cruiser bicycle worth $250 was stolen after it was left unlocked and propped against a wall at a house between 9:35 and 10 a.m. Oct. 10 in the 100 block of Pine Street, police said.

- A Stihl weed trimmer worth $236 was stolen after it was left in the back of a city maintenance truck parked between 1:10 and 1:30 p.m. Thursday near Mealy Road and Stuart Street, police said.

- A drunken and belligerent 20-year-old man was arrested for disorderly conduct after kicking several nurses and a doctor at Baptist Medical Center-Beaches at 1350 13th St. S. about 9 a.m. Friday, police said.

The man had been admitted several hours before, at 3 a.m., for a high level of alcohol intoxication but when he was evaluated he was found to have no apparent injuries that needed attention so he was discharged.

Police were called because during the man's evaluation he was uncooperative with staff and physically combative, they reported. Staff told police they were in fear for their safety once he was unrestrained. When an officer went to see the man, the man's eyes were still bloodshot, he spoke slowly and with a slur, and he smelled of alcohol. The officer reported that when he asked the patient what his problem was, the man said, "I'm from Virginia, yo." Then he cursed and insulted the officer several times. When he was unrestrained to be released, he fought with the officer and was put into handcuffs and taken into custody.

- After a man reported at 1:35 p.m. Sunday that a bicycle that he put in the bike rack at the Target store at 490 Marsh Landing Parkway was missing, police found it in a ditch nearby and arrested someone based on footage from a store surveillance tape.

The man had ridden his friend's bike, worth $100 to $300, to the store and then went in to shop. Surveillance footage revealed that a white male with brown hair wearing a gray jacket, black jeans and a blue shirt got on the unlocked bike and rode it away. Police reported that about two hours later, the man came back to the store and was questioned. He told police he left the bike in a ditch in the 4200 block of Third Street. They found it there and took it in for evidence.

- After a woman who lives in the 3000 block of America Avenue reported at 9:30 p.m. Sunday that some jewelry and a revolver were missing from her house, police tracked down her 18-year-old grandson, who confessed.

The woman told police her grandson had been living with her since March, and that he knew where she kept the five-shot revolver. A safe where she keeps her jewelry was locked, but a diamond ring and gold braided necklace were missing. When she questioned her grandson's mother, the mother reported that he'd been bragging about making money at a pawnshop.

Police said when they found the grandson at a friend's house in the 700 block of Marshview Drive, he admitted the theft and said that he pawned the ring and necklace for $250, and that he sold the revolver for $100. He was arrested for grand theft.

- A 36-year-old man was arrested at 1:10 a.m. Monday at Brix Taphouse at 300 Second St. N. after starting a fight with bar patrons and then struggling with police.

An employee told police the man was one of several people trying to start fights. The officer reported that when he told the man to step outside, the man refused and then struggled with him. Police put him in handcuffs and took him to Duval County jail.

- A 28-year-old woman was charged with battery, disorderly intoxication and resisting a law enforcement officer after police said she attacked her 29-year-old boyfriend about 8:25 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of First Street.

Police said the boyfriend asked the woman to leave his home and she refused. The woman then became confrontational and the argument carried out into the street as police arrived. An officer said he saw the woman try to kick, beat and punch the man. When an officer tried to put handcuffs on the woman, she pulled away and tried to run away before she was restrained and put into the back of the police vehicle.

- Two bicycles - a Sand Dollar and a Mango beach cruiser - worth a combined $300 were stolen after they were left unlocked outside a home between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Neptune Lane, police said.

- Several cars were burglarized and vandalized Sunday at the Guana Middle and North beach accesses in the 1100 and 1600 blocks of Florida A1A.

Police said the front passenger windows of a 2002 Honda SUV, a 2009 Toyota SUV and Chevy Tahoe were broken out between 3 and 5 p.m. A 2006 Honda Odyssey van rear passenger window was also smashed. Purses were stolen from three of the cars.

- Someone broke into a Chevy Tahoe sport utility vehicle and stole the driver's purse Sunday at the Mickler's Landing beach parking lot at 1109 Ponte Vedra Blvd.

The driver told police that her purse had been stashed under the brake pedal and that its contents had been stolen. Police said the driver's side door window had been destroyed and that the purse had contained a wallet with her driver's license, credit cards, a checkbook, $25 in cash and other items.

Staff writers Maggie FitzRoy, Shakaya Andres and Drew Dixon compiled this report.
